James Lockhart is a Tax Partner in the firm’s Real Estate Group. He has over 20 years of experience serving a full range of clients in real estate, hospitality, and construction. He specializes in tax and business structuring, investment, financing, due diligence and exit strategies.  With his financial experience, combined with his legal background, Jim is uniquely able to bring clarity to complex tax issues and transactions that enable his clients to achieve the best outcomes possible.

Jim is a key thought leader for the firm. He has written extensively for national and regional tax publications, and his work has been cited by the U.S. Supreme Court, various Federal Courts of Appeal and Federal District Courts, as well as the U.S. Tax Court. Jim is also a frequent speaker at national and regional real estate and tax conferences and has been an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota Law School, The University of Minnesota Carlson School of Business and the William Mitchell School of Law. After his own law school education, Jim served as an Attorney Advisor for the U.S. Tax Court in Washington, D.C.

Jim has a proven track record of providing extraordinary, proactive advice in helping clients succeed and grow.  He has a vast network in the real estate industry throughout the U.S. and will leverage his relationships to help another client whenever possible.

Prior to joining Anchin, Jim served as the national leader of the real estate practice for a top 20 accounting and consulting firm. During his tenure there, the commercial real estate, hospitality and construction practice tripled its revenue, and he mentored many of its partners and leaders across the U.S.
